Most children between the ages of 2-4 years old have energy levels that as adults we only wish to absorb a fraction of that energy on a daily basis. Toddlers never stop moving. From the minute they open their eyes in the morning, it’s constantly go, go, go! As tiring as a toddler can be, it’s also one of the most fun and influential ages for kids. This age range is a perfect time to introduce any type of physical activity into their spirited young lives, but the question is which activity is best for your child? There are so many sports to choose from, and you could easily just pick one and see how your child adjusts. But as an intuitive parent, you know your child best and the qualities they’ve developed at a young age should be able to answer your questions.
Here’s what to look for in your child to decide if dance is right for them:
Behavior at Home
When it comes to watching television, there are two types of children. The child that is so captivated with what is on the screen, not even the sound of an ice cream truck’s music could interrupt their deep zone. Or, the child that literally cannot sit still for more than one minute before they’re up wiggling and moving to the commercials and imitating any kind of dancer that comes on screen. Sound familiar? Then dance classes might be on your horizon.
Does your child turn your living room into a dance party and break into a car seat dance routine to the music on the car radio that it causes your car to bounce aggressively at intersections? We’ve been there. Music speaks to toddlers in a way that they truly cannot control their body movement, and you need to embrace that and strongly consider registering your toddler in our children’s dance classes.
Personality and Interests
Similar to the tendencies mentioned above—your child’s habits and their character is extremely telling, even if they may not verbally say they want to sign up for dance. If your child would rather re-enact a dance scene from their favorite movie rather than pick up a ball, then the decision should be rather obvious. Not all toddlers and young children that are destined for dance classes are bouncing off the walls; some children are the complete opposite. A lot of our young ballerina’s are very mild-tempered, focused (as much as a toddler can be), and intrigued by every aspect of their ballet classes. Ballet lessons have captivated them, and they are on track to a fulfilling future in dance. Parents leave our studios after classes end feeling confident that they have found a healthy and productive way to exert their child’s energy, as well as entrusting us with to teach your child the foundational dance skills at a young age.
But What Kind of Dance Is Best?
There are so many different types of dance lessons you could sign your child up for, but you don’t have the time (or budget) to register for more than one. That’s okay—we can help! Miss Colleen’s Elite Dancentre has an Introduction to Dance designed solely for toddlers that introduce basic ballet techniques and creative movement. This class can help direct your child’s interests further and decide which style is best for them. Our dance academy does offer specialized classes for the toddlers that have their minds made up in categories like ballet/tap, jazz/tap, an introduction to both ballet and jazz.
