Helping Your Child Balance School & Dancing

School has been in session for a couple of months now, which means that kids are less excited about the homework. In these times, children are so much more likely to direct their attention to everything but school, which is definitely not the ideal scenario. If you’ve noticed that your child is starting to spend more time practicing dance or that they’re starting to slip in school because of dance, today’s blog is for you.

While it’s perfectly fine for children to be excited about dance and want to spend time practicing, school needs to come first — always! We at Miss Colleen’s Elite Dancentre understand this, which is exactly why today’s blog is going to go over a few tips that can help balance out school and dance. Let’s dive in.

Create a Schedule

Sticking to a schedule is one of the best things that you can do to help your child balance school and dance. Even though homework is far from exciting, it needs to get done. Start by setting a strict schedule for your child that includes school work, getting ready for bed, and their bedtime. By setting a particular time for them to start their homework, your child knows that this is where their attention needs to be. If they finish their homework, they can then practice dance, play with toys, or enjoy screen time. At this point, the homework is done, and fun can be had.

Use Time Wisely

Aside from school and dance, there are a million other things that are happening in our day to day lives, which is why you want to make sure that you’re making the most of the time you have. Even the smallest windows of time can make a big difference in how smoothly things go. One of the times that we always suggest making the most of is the time spent in the car. Whether you’re going to practice or heading home, take this time to practice spelling, listen about your child’s day, figure out what homework needs to be done, and the like. That way you are able to figure out what needs to happen once you’ve arrived to your final destination.

Utilize Weekend Time

Weekends are a fantastic time for everyone to catch up, and when your child is juggling school and dance, this is a time that you want to take advantage of. If there is a regular assignment that your child needs to do, spending some time on the weekend to tackle it can make all the difference. For example, if your child has to spend an hour reading each week, utilize free time on the weekend to get this task done. Now, you have one less thing to worry about during the week.
